Training
Practical in-car training is carried out by one of the group’s qualified tutors who give their time freely to assist associate members to pass the advanced driving test.
Training is usually given in the associates own car apart from demonstration drives given by the tutor. Initially training sessions last for approximately one hour and are carried out at times convenient to both the tutor and associate.
All our tutors have passed the advanced driving test and hold either Gold or Silver grades. Three of our tutors have also passed RoADAR’s Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction. During an observed run the following aspects of driving skill are covered.
Use of Controls
Steering Pull-Push with correct hand position. Smooth control
Clutch Used smoothly, with good control
Gears Correct gear used for all road conditions with block changing as necessary
Brakes Smooth one phase braking as necessary
Accelerator Smooth pedal control
Additionally, safe progress requires good all round observation, anticipation and planning
Another important aspect of advanced driving is the associate’s use of "The System of Car Control" as described in “Roadcraft”, the Police Driver’s Handbook. We recommend that all associates obtain a copy of ‘Roadcraft’ when joining the group.
